Legal Trainee – Competition Investigation
The Belgian Competition Authority (BCA) on the Rue du Progrès in Brussels offers a traineeship in its Investigation Service. This is a rare opportunity to gain first-hand experience in public competition law enforcement at a national competition authority based in the EU capital.
As a trainee, you will assist investigators with cartel investigations, merger assessments, and policy research, gaining unique insight into how competition law is enforced in practice. The BCA cooperates closely with DG Competition and ECN partner authorities.
What You Will Do
- Assist investigators with research on cartel and abuse of dominance cases
- Support merger notification review and competitive analysis
- Research Belgian and EU competition law developments
- Draft summaries of BCA, European Commission, and CJEU decisions
- Attend internal case team discussions and policy meetings
Responsibilities
- Support competition investigation teams on active cases
- Conduct legal and economic research
- Draft case summaries and research memoranda
- Attend hearings and internal meetings
- Complete assigned research projects
Requirements
- Enrolled in or recently completed Master in Law at a Belgian or European university
- Strong interest in competition law and economic regulation
- Knowledge of Book IV CEL/WER and Articles 101/102 TFEU
- Fluent in French or Dutch; English required
- Belgian or EU citizenship required (public sector)
- Strong analytical and legal writing skills
Compensation
€1,000 - €1,200/year
