Job Description
Criminal Defence Lawyer at Cheok Advocates & Solicitors
Cheok Advocates & Solicitors is seeking an experienced Criminal Defence Lawyer for its Bandar Seri Begawan practice. The role involves defending clients in criminal proceedings before the Magistrate's Court, Intermediate Court, and High Court of Brunei Darussalam, as well as matters arising under the Syariah Penal Code Order 2013.
Key Responsibilities
- Represent clients in criminal proceedings under the Penal Code (Chapter 22) and the Criminal Procedure Code (Chapter 7)
- Handle bail applications, pleas in mitigation, and criminal appeals before the Court of Appeal
- Advise on matters arising under the Syariah Penal Code Order 2013 where dual jurisdiction applies
- Defend clients in drug-related offences under the Misuse of Drugs Act (Chapter 27)
- Handle cases involving fraud, theft, assault, and other criminal offences
- Visit clients in custody and prepare defence strategies for trial
Responsibilities
- Defend clients in criminal proceedings across all Brunei courts
- Prepare defence strategies and conduct criminal trials
- Handle appeals and bail applications
Requirements
- Admitted to practise in Brunei under the Legal Profession Act (Chapter 132)
- 3-7 years of experience in criminal litigation and defence work
- Strong advocacy and oral argument skills
- Knowledge of the Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code, and Evidence Act
- Understanding of the Syariah Penal Code Order 2013 is an advantage
- Fluent in English and Malay
Compensation
B$3,000 - B$4,500/year
