Job Description

Fintech & Digital Assets Associate — Appleby Mauritius

Appleby Mauritius is expanding its fintech and digital assets practice and seeks an Associate Barrister to join its Ebene Cybercity office. Mauritius has positioned itself as a leading jurisdiction for fintech and virtual asset regulation through the Virtual Asset and Initial Token Offering Services Act 2021 (VAITOS Act) and the FSC's regulatory sandbox framework — creating a new frontier of legal practice.

The Associate will advise on licensing applications under the VAITOS Act, regulatory sandbox participation, digital banking initiatives under the Bank of Mauritius framework, and cross-border fintech structuring. This role is at the cutting edge of Mauritius's ambition to become a global fintech hub alongside its established Global Business sector.

Responsibilities

  • Advise on licensing applications under the VAITOS Act 2021 and FSC digital asset frameworks
  • Support fintech clients navigating the FSC regulatory sandbox programme
  • Draft terms of service, token sale documentation, and platform user agreements
  • Advise on anti-money laundering compliance for virtual asset service providers under FIAMLA
  • Research international fintech regulatory developments and advise on Mauritius positioning
  • Coordinate with Appleby's global fintech practice across offshore jurisdictions

Requirements

  • Barrister or Attorney admitted by the Mauritius Bar Council with 3–5 years' post-admission experience
  • Knowledge of the Virtual Asset and Initial Token Offering Services Act 2021 (VAITOS Act)
  • Understanding of the Financial Services Act 2007 and FSC regulatory sandbox framework
  • Familiarity with digital banking, payment services, and e-money regulation
  • Interest in blockchain, DeFi, and crypto-asset regulatory developments globally
  • LL.B. from a recognised institution; technology or fintech law specialisation advantageous
  • Strong English drafting skills; French proficiency welcome
