Job Description

Islamic Banking Legal Advisor — Maybank

Maybank, Malaysia's largest financial institution, is seeking an Islamic Banking Legal Advisor for its Maybank Islamic Berhad subsidiary. Based at Menara Maybank in Kuala Lumpur, the role involves advising on Shari'ah-compliant banking products, Islamic financing structures, and regulatory compliance with Bank Negara Malaysia's Islamic banking framework.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft and review Islamic financing documentation including murabahah, ijarah, musharakah mutanaqisah, and wakalah agreements
  • Advise on compliance with the Islamic Financial Services Act 2013, Bank Negara Malaysia's Shari'ah governance framework, and the Shari'ah Advisory Council's rulings
  • Work with the Shari'ah Committee to ensure all banking products comply with Shari'ah principles
  • Structure sukuk issuances and Islamic debt capital market instruments in coordination with the Securities Commission Malaysia
  • Handle disputes relating to Islamic banking contracts, including matters referred to the Muamalat Division
  • Advise on cross-border Islamic finance transactions leveraging Maybank's regional presence

Requirements

  • Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya with 4-7 years PQE in banking law, with specific experience in Islamic finance
  • Strong knowledge of the Islamic Financial Services Act 2013 and Bank Negara Malaysia's Shari'ah governance framework
  • Understanding of Islamic finance principles including murabahah, ijarah, musharakah, and wakalah
  • Experience drafting Islamic financing documentation for a bank or financial institution
  • LL.B. from a recognised university; qualifications in Islamic finance or Shari'ah law (e.g., CIFP, CSAA) are an advantage
  • Proficiency in English and Bahasa Malaysia
  • Ability to work with Shari'ah scholars and translate complex Shari'ah principles into legal documentation
