Job Description

Junior Associate – EU State Aid & Subsidies

Cleary Gottlieb's Brussels office on Rue de la Loi is looking for a Junior Associate to join its growing EU State Aid practice. With the EU's expanding scrutiny of government subsidies, including the Foreign Subsidies Regulation (FSR), this is one of the fastest-growing practice areas in Brussels.

You will assist senior lawyers in advising EU Member States, regional governments, and corporate beneficiaries on state aid notifications, recovery proceedings, and FSR filing obligations before the European Commission.

What You Will Do

  • Research EU state aid rules under Articles 107-109 TFEU
  • Assist with state aid notifications and pre-notification discussions with DG Competition
  • Draft legal memoranda on GBER (General Block Exemption Regulation) self-assessments
  • Support clients with Foreign Subsidies Regulation (FSR) notifications and reviews
  • Monitor EU state aid decisions and CJEU judgments

Responsibilities

  • Support senior lawyers on state aid and FSR matters
  • Draft research memoranda and client advisory notes
  • Prepare state aid notification forms and supporting documentation
  • Monitor and summarize European Commission decisions and CJEU case law
  • Contribute to publications and knowledge management

Requirements

  • Belgian Bar admission or eligibility for admission
  • Master in Law from a Belgian or European university; College of Europe Bruges or LL.M. preferred
  • 0-3 years of experience in EU law, state aid, or competition law
  • Strong academic record and demonstrated interest in EU law
  • Fluent in English and French or Dutch
  • Strong analytical and legal writing skills
