SBM Group, Mauritius's second-largest banking group, seeks a Legal Counsel for its cross-border banking operations at SBM Tower, Port Louis. The Legal Counsel will support legal matters across SBM's Mauritius, India, Kenya, and Madagascar operations. The role involves cross-border lending documentation, regulatory compliance with the Banking Act 2004 and the Reserve Bank of India regulations, trade finance, and corporate governance for a complex multi-jurisdictional banking group listed on the Stock Exchange of Mauritius.

Responsibilities

  • Draft and review credit documentation for SBM's domestic and cross-border lending portfolio
  • Advise on regulatory compliance across multiple jurisdictions (Mauritius, India, Kenya, Madagascar)
  • Support corporate governance and board reporting for SBM Group's SEM-listed entities
  • Handle trade finance documentation and correspondent banking agreements
  • Coordinate with external counsel in India, Kenya, and Madagascar on cross-border matters
  • Advise on FIAMLA compliance and cross-border AML/CFT harmonisation

Requirements

  • Barrister or Attorney admitted by the Mauritius Bar Council with 4–7 years' post-admission experience
  • Banking and finance law background with cross-border transaction exposure
  • Knowledge of the Banking Act 2004, Bank of Mauritius guidelines, and ideally Reserve Bank of India regulations
  • Experience with credit documentation, trade finance, or correspondent banking
  • Understanding of corporate governance for SEM-listed financial institutions
  • LL.B. from a recognised institution; experience in Indian or East African legal environments advantageous
  • English fluency required; French and Hindi/Bhojpuri advantageous
