Job Description
Fonterra Co-operative Group is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel for its Co-operative Affairs team at 109 Fanshawe Street, Auckland. As the world's largest dairy exporter processing approximately 80% of New Zealand's milk, Fonterra's legal team manages complex international trade law, export regulation, and joint venture matters across 30+ countries including China, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.
Key Responsibilities
- Advise on international trade agreements, export regulations, and sanitary/phytosanitary (SPS) measures affecting dairy exports
- Handle compliance with New Zealand's free trade agreements (NZ-China FTA, CPTPP, RCEP) and customs regulations
- Draft and negotiate international joint venture, supply, and distribution agreements
- Advise on Dairy Industry Restructuring Act 2001 (DIRA) compliance and Fonterra's co-operative structure obligations
- Manage cross-border disputes and international arbitration proceedings
Requirements
- Admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor in New Zealand or equivalent international qualification; 6-10 years PQE
- Significant experience in international trade law, export regulation, or cross-border commercial transactions
- Knowledge of WTO/SPS frameworks, CPTPP, and NZ trade policy
- Experience in the FMCG, agricultural, or dairy sector preferred
