Position Overview
Job Description
Bank Islam Malaysia, the first Islamic bank established in Malaysia, is seeking a Shari'ah Compliance Lawyer to join its Legal Division at Menara Bank Islam in Kuala Lumpur. The role focuses on ensuring all banking products and operations comply with Shari'ah principles as determined by the Shari'ah Advisory Council of Bank Negara Malaysia.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and vet all Islamic banking products, contracts, and operational processes for Shari'ah compliance
- Advise on the Islamic Financial Services Act 2013 and Bank Negara Malaysia's Shari'ah governance framework
- Draft Islamic financing documentation including murabahah, ijarah thumma al-bay', musharakah mutanaqisah, and wakalah bi al-istithmar agreements
- Work with the Shari'ah Committee to obtain rulings on new products and resolve Shari'ah non-compliance issues
- Handle disputes involving Islamic banking contracts, including references to the Shari'ah Advisory Council under Section 56 of the Central Bank of Malaysia Act 2009
- Conduct Shari'ah compliance training for business units and operational teams

Requirements
- Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya with 2-5 years PQE in Islamic banking or finance law
- Strong knowledge of Islamic finance principles (fiqh al-muamalat) and the Shari'ah Advisory Council's rulings
- Understanding of the Islamic Financial Services Act 2013 and Bank Negara Malaysia's Shari'ah governance policy documents
- LL.B. from a recognised university; additional qualifications in Islamic finance or Shari'ah (e.g., IIUM Shari'ah degree, CIFP, CSAA) are highly preferred
- Experience drafting Islamic financing documentation
- Proficiency in English, Bahasa Malaysia, and ideally Arabic for Shari'ah text review
- Ability to bridge legal, Shari'ah, and business perspectives
Compensation
RM6,000 - RM12,000/year
