Job Description
Torys LLP is hiring an Associate for its Privacy & Data Protection practice at 79 Wellington Street West, Toronto. As Canada prepares to implement the Consumer Privacy Protection Act (CPPA) to replace PIPEDA, you will advise major corporations on compliance with evolving Canadian privacy legislation.
Key Responsibilities
- Advise clients on compliance with PIPEDA, Quebec's Law 25, and the forthcoming Consumer Privacy Protection Act (CPPA)
- Conduct privacy impact assessments and data mapping exercises for corporate clients
- Draft and review privacy policies, data processing agreements, and cross-border data transfer mechanisms
- Advise on data breach notification requirements under PIPEDA and provincial legislation
- Represent clients in Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) investigations and complaints
Requirements
- Called to the Bar in Ontario (LSO member)
- 3-5 years post-call experience in privacy, data protection, or technology law
- JD/LLB from a recognized law school; CIPP/C certification an asset
- Strong understanding of PIPEDA, CPPA, Quebec Law 25, and GDPR cross-border implications
- Excellent client advisory and stakeholder management skills
