Legal Counsel – International Trade & Customs
Maersk on Esplanaden in Copenhagen is seeking a Legal Counsel to join its International Trade and Customs legal team. As the world's largest container shipping company, Maersk handles millions of containers annually, requiring sophisticated legal support on customs compliance, trade sanctions, and international trade regulations across 130+ countries.
What You Will Do
- Advise on customs classification, valuation, and origin rules under EU customs law and the WCO Harmonized System
- Handle trade sanctions compliance across EU, OFAC, and UN sanctions programmes
- Advise on free trade agreement utilization and preferential origin certification
- Support customs audit defence and post-clearance reviews
- Draft and negotiate customs brokerage agreements and freight forwarding terms
- Advise on export control compliance for dual-use goods
Responsibilities
- Provide trade and customs legal advisory across Maersk's global operations
- Manage sanctions screening and trade compliance matters
- Support customs audit processes and regulatory interactions
- Draft and review commercial agreements for customs and trade terms
- Coordinate with external trade counsel in multiple jurisdictions
Requirements
- Cand.jur. from a Danish university or equivalent legal qualification
- 3-6 years of experience in customs law, international trade, or sanctions compliance
- Knowledge of EU Union Customs Code, trade sanctions frameworks, and WCO conventions
- Fluent in English; Danish is preferred
- Experience in logistics, shipping, or supply chain legal work is an advantage
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, global environment
Compensation
kr48,000 - kr62,000/year
