Job Description

Associate – International Trade & Customs

Van Bael & Bellis on Avenue Louise in Brussels is seeking an Associate for its internationally recognized Trade and Customs practice. The firm has been a pioneer in EU trade law, advising on anti-dumping investigations, countervailing duties, safeguard measures, and WTO dispute settlement.

Brussels is the seat of EU trade policy-making and the ideal location for a career in international trade law. You will advise importers, exporters, and industry associations on EU trade defence proceedings before DG Trade of the European Commission.

What You Will Do

  • Advise on EU anti-dumping and countervailing duty investigations before DG Trade
  • Represent clients in trade defence proceedings including questionnaire responses and hearings
  • Advise on EU customs classification, valuation, and origin rules under the Union Customs Code
  • Support WTO dispute settlement proceedings and monitor WTO Appellate Body jurisprudence
  • Advise on EU sanctions and export control compliance

Responsibilities

  • Manage trade defence proceedings from initiation through final determination
  • Draft legal submissions and questionnaire responses for anti-dumping investigations
  • Advise on customs compliance and supply chain legal structuring
  • Monitor EU trade policy developments including FTA negotiations
  • Contribute to the firm's trade law publications and client seminars

Requirements

  • Belgian Bar admission or equivalent EU qualification
  • Master in Law; LL.M. in International Trade Law or EU Law preferred
  • 3-6 years of experience in EU trade law, customs, or international economic law
  • Knowledge of EU trade defence instruments, Union Customs Code, and WTO law
  • Fluent in English; French or Dutch is an advantage
  • Experience with EU institutions and DG Trade procedures
