Job Description

Associate – Life Sciences & Pharma Regulatory

Van Bael & Bellis on Avenue Louise in Brussels is expanding its practice to cover the growing intersection of EU competition law and life sciences regulation. Brussels hosts the European Medicines Agency's (EMA) coordination activities, and many pharmaceutical companies maintain EU affairs offices in the European Quarter.

What You Will Do

  • Advise pharmaceutical and biotech companies on EU competition law issues including pay-for-delay settlements and reverse payment agreements
  • Handle EU regulatory data exclusivity and patent linkage matters
  • Advise on EU state aid rules applicable to life sciences R&D incentives
  • Support EU trade defence proceedings affecting pharmaceutical active ingredients
  • Advise on EU pricing and reimbursement transparency requirements

Responsibilities

  • Advise pharma clients on EU competition and regulatory matters
  • Draft submissions to the European Commission and national authorities
  • Research and advise on pharma sector competition law developments
  • Contribute to the firm's life sciences practice group publications
  • Coordinate with the firm's trade team on pharmaceutical trade defence cases

Requirements

  • Belgian Bar admission or equivalent EU qualification
  • Master in Law; LL.M. in EU Law, Competition Law, or Health Law preferred
  • 3-5 years of experience in EU competition law, life sciences regulatory, or pharmaceutical law
  • Knowledge of EU competition law as applied to pharma sector (pay-for-delay, excessive pricing, FRAND)
  • Fluent in English; French or Dutch is an advantage
  • Scientific background or understanding of pharmaceutical regulatory framework is desirable
