Job Description

We're looking for a General Counsel to own and lead Lemonade's entire legal, risk, and regulatory function. Reporting directly to the CEO, you’ll serve as the company’s chief legal advisor and one of the most senior leaders shaping how Lemonade navigates risk, scales globally, and operates as a public company. Lemonade’s current operations span the US, the EU, the UK and the Middle East.

We believe two things matter for every leadership role at Lemonade: leadership that sets the bar for excellence, builds high performing teams, and holds them accountable, and strategy that thinks several years ahead and turns ambitious plans into reality. These aren't buzzwords, they're how we actually work.

Our AI-first approach isn't just a tagline either. We're building the future of insurance with AI at the center, and we need people who are genuinely excited to learn and grow alongside these tools.

In this role you'll
  • Own all public company legal responsibilities, including SEC reporting, disclosure practices, insider trading compliance, governance, and Board/committee matters

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO, executive team, and Board on company strategy, material risk, regulatory exposure, litigation, corporate transactions, and reputational matters—leading with a business lens, not a defensive one

  • Partner closely with insurance, claims, security, product, engineering, finance, and people teams to proactively identify and mitigate legal and operational risk

  • Lead dispute management across the business

  • Reduce reliance on outside counsel by relying on a capable in-house function and bringing sharp commercial judgment and negotiation to every deal

  • Build scalable legal processes and actively use AI tools to drive efficiency across the legal team

  • Lead and manage our group of talented in-house attorneys across the business

What you'll need
  • 12+ years of legal experience, including time as a corporate associate at a law firm and proven in-house experience at a public or high-growth tech company

  • Bachelor's and law degree; bar admission in good standing (New York preferred)

  • Deep grounding in SEC compliance, public company reporting, and corporate governance — you've owned this work, not just advised on it

  • Strong executive presence and the judgment to operate effectively with CEOs, Boards, regulators, investors, and senior leadership teams - guiding strategy, not just flagging risk

  • Experience managing disputed matters

  • P&C insurance experience or a designation like CPCU is a plus, but not required

  • A genuine business-first mindset and risk appetite — you're known for enabling deals, not blocking them

  • Experience leading legal teams and developing strong in-house talent, while maintaining high standards and clear accountability

  • Ready to work in our NYC office most days of the week

  • Enthusiasm about learning and adapting to the exciting world of AI – a commitment to exploring this field is a fundamental part of our culture — you actively use these tools and see them as fundamental to how great legal work gets done

Please note that we are unable to sponsor applicants for work visas

Lemonade's US base salary range for this full-time position is $325,000 - $350,000 plus generous equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Speak to your recruiter to hear more about the specific salary range for your preferred location.
