Job Description

Head of Legal – Banking & Wealth Management

Banque Internationale a Luxembourg (BIL), Luxembourg's oldest private bank founded in 1856 on Boulevard Royal, is seeking a Head of Legal to lead its legal department.

BIL is a cornerstone of Luxembourg's private banking and wealth management sector. You will oversee all legal affairs for the bank, managing a team of legal counsel and advising the Executive Committee and Board on regulatory, corporate, and commercial legal matters under Luxembourg banking law.

What You Will Do

  • Lead the legal department and advise the Executive Committee on strategic legal matters
  • Oversee CSSF regulatory compliance and manage relationships with the regulator
  • Advise on private banking, wealth management, and custody services legal frameworks
  • Manage litigation, disputes, and client complaint escalations
  • Oversee contract management for banking products and correspondent banking agreements
  • Report to the Board and Audit Committee on legal risk and compliance matters

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the bank's legal department and external counsel relationships
  • Advise the Executive Committee and Board on all legal matters
  • Oversee regulatory compliance and CSSF interaction
  • Manage banking litigation and dispute resolution
  • Develop and implement legal policies and risk mitigation strategies

Requirements

  • Admission to the Barreau de Luxembourg or equivalent qualification in a recognised EU jurisdiction
  • Master in Law from a recognised European university; LL.M. in Banking or Finance Law preferred
  • 12-18 years of experience in banking law with significant in-house leadership experience
  • Deep knowledge of the Loi du 5 avril 1993 and CSSF supervisory framework for banks
  • Experience managing a legal team and reporting to executive committees
  • Fluent in English, French, and German; Luxembourgish is an advantage
