Job Description

Senior Litigation Barrister — Juristconsult Chambers

Juristconsult Chambers, one of Mauritius's most respected litigation practices, seeks a Senior Barrister for its Port Louis offices near the Supreme Court of Mauritius. The firm has a distinguished tradition of courtroom advocacy before the Supreme Court and, where applicable, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in London — Mauritius's ultimate appellate court for civil matters.

The Senior Barrister will handle complex commercial litigation, insurance disputes, maritime claims under the Merchant Shipping Act 2007, and constitutional challenges before the Supreme Court of Mauritius. Mauritius's mixed legal system — where the Code Civil Mauricien (derived from the Code Napoléon) governs private law while English common law principles apply to commercial and public law — demands a Barrister with dual-system expertise and exceptional oral and written advocacy skills in both English and French.

Responsibilities

  • Lead complex commercial litigation before the Supreme Court of Mauritius
  • Handle maritime claims and shipping disputes under the Merchant Shipping Act 2007
  • Argue insurance coverage disputes and subrogation claims
  • Prepare and argue constitutional motions and judicial review applications
  • Draft pleadings, written submissions, and opinion briefs in English and French
  • Mentor junior Barristers and supervise Pupils in the litigation practice

Requirements

  • Barrister admitted by the Mauritius Bar Council with minimum 8 years' post-admission litigation experience
  • Extensive courtroom experience before the Supreme Court of Mauritius
  • Deep knowledge of the Code Civil Mauricien, the Code de Commerce, and Mauritian procedural law
  • Experience with appeals to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council
  • Expertise in commercial litigation, insurance, or maritime law
  • LL.B. from the University of Mauritius, University of London, or equivalent; French law training advantageous
  • Bilingual English and French advocacy skills essential
