Job Description

Legal Aid Specialist — Danish Refugee Council, Iraq

Danish Refugee Council is recruiting a Legal Aid Specialist for its Iraq legal aid portfolio across Ninevah, Diyala, and Erbil, with travel across DRC and partner implementation locations. The role oversees technical quality for legal information, counselling, assistance, and representation activities serving displacement-affected communities.

Why this role matters

This is a senior legal aid position for a candidate who can strengthen DRC Iraq's protection work, coach legal staff, coordinate with public authorities and humanitarian actors, and keep legal aid delivery aligned with current Iraqi legal procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to DRC Protection Officers and Protection Assistants working on legal aid
  • Ensure legal aid activities follow DRC standards, SOPs, and current Iraqi legal procedures
  • Coach legal staff, review casework, and strengthen legal aid tools and guidance
  • Coordinate referrals, legal case review, and evidence-based advocacy with relevant partners
  • Maintain working relationships with courts, Civil Affairs Directorates, community leaders, and service providers

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in law or protection, especially migrant, IDP, or refugee protection
  • Degree in Law, Human Rights, or a relevant field
  • Experience coordinating with national or local authorities and humanitarian coordination forums
  • Arabic fluency required; good English required; Kurdish desirable
  • Strong capacity-building, supervision, and stakeholder management skills
